Back in 2020, I wanted to create a tool that could serve the board of directors and senior management in collective management organizations (CMOs) in the different creative industries. I worked with them on issues related to proper governance structures and decision-making processes, accountability and transparency in their organizations, and realized there was a need for a publication that targeted the questions related to good governance in CMOs. This is when the first version of my booklet Good Governance for Board Members of CMOs was published.
It has since then been used in conjunction with different workshops and capacity-building projects as well as a toolkit for current members of the board and a resource for new board members’ induction. Over the years, I have had the pleasure to discuss the issues with a number of people from around the globe and receive feedback on the publication. I updated it in 2022 with a smaller revision and now in 2026 it’s time to launch a completely renewed version.
The basic issues have remained the same but the 2026 version also includes a lot of new and rewritten parts as well as new tools to facilitate discussions as as well evaluate and develop good governance practices. The topics include:
- Collective rights management as a business
- Governance structures and processes in CMOs
- Accountability in CMOs
- Transparency in CMOs
- Evaluation, development and continuous improvement
The goal of the booklet has always remained the same: to serve as a toolkit for board members and senior management in securing that good governance translates into concrete practices and processes. Case studies help understand how these issues may manifest in real life and checklists facilitate structured evaluations and discussions.

My aim has always been to keep the booklet concise, practical and concrete. It can help refresh the memory after a workshop, in a governance restructing process or when it is important to get everyone on the same page in governance topics.
