Governance toolkit

Governance can seldom be improved by a quick fix. It’s not done by simply updating a policy, creating a code of conduct, or publishing organizational values on a website. Instead, good governance develops through continuous reflection, discussion, planned actions and deliberate effort over time. Different tools are needed both to assess the current situation and to move towards the desired outcome.

Tools such as governance assessments, board evaluations, structured discussions on strategy and governance, checklists and analytical frameworks can help boards and leadership teams examine how governance functions in reality. They provide a way to take stock of existing practices, identify gaps and clarify where improvements are needed.

Other tools support the development phase: governance development roadmaps, role and responsibility mapping, decision-making frameworks, and structured follow-up processes that help translate insights into practical action. In many cases, the most valuable tool is simply a well-facilitated discussion that allows leadership teams to address difficult questions openly and constructively.

Building strong governance is a bit like construction work. Before building anything, you first need to understand the ground you are standing on. Assessments and evaluations help organizations map the terrain, while checklists and analytical frameworks ensure that structures and processes are aligned. Strategy discussions and governance reviews help design the blueprint for stronger leadership and oversight.

Strong governance structures, clear decision-making processes, a culture of accountability and transparent communication practices are not built overnight. Like any construction project, strengthening governance requires planning, the right tools and continuous refinement as well as someone to lead the process.

My publication Good Governance for Board Members of CMOs includes different analysis and development tools. I am happy to adapt these tools to any other type of organization as well. LeadMWell is here to support you throughout the assessment and development processes. I can assist your organization in compiling a toolkit that helps you build a solid, sustainable structure and practices that are fit for purpose.
